RV TIPS & TRICKS

The Cariboo Gold Rush

Sometimes you have to just roll with the punches, go with the flow, and realize that everything happens for a reason!

Today we had a later start than we had hoped for, so we ended up changing our plan slightly to accommodate the late departure. We set out to do the Barkerville/Likely historic Gold Rush Circle Route, and planned on staying in one of the Barkerville campgrounds. Instead, we found ourselves staying at a private campground in Cottonwood—a little community halfway between Quesnel, B.C. and Wells, B.C.

For anyone who’s sitting there reading this like “Barkerville??? What is that?!”—here’s the skinny:

After the California Gold Rush in 1849, the prospectors headed north to Canada. In August of 1862, an English prospector named Billy Barker was one of the first to strike it rich in the Cariboo Region. It was the most famous event of the Cariboo Gold Rush, and founded the town of Barkerville. By 1865, Barkerville was the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. To this day, it’s one of Canada’s largest historic sites.

History lesson over!

We found this charming little campground roughly 15km off of HWY 26. We immediately unhitched the RV and started to head to some waterfalls we knew were in the area. That is definitely a feature we love about these Chemo RV rental trailers—they unhook with ease and you have a vehicle to do satellite adventures in.
