Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or you’re thinking of hitting the road for the entire summer; it’s essential to find an RV that fits your family’s needs.
The first thing to consider, is whether you need a towable trailer, or a motorized RV. If the journey is the focus of your trip, then a motorized vehicle may be your best bet. If your focus is where you’re planning to stay, then consider a towable.
Towable trailers
A big advantage of a towable trailer is that once you’ve got to your destination, you can setup your trailer and use your regular vehicle for getting around. Most families start off with a towable trailer, like a tent trailer, before moving onto motorized or larger RVs. You can tow a tent trailer with almost any family vehicle and you’ll still get amenities that you wouldn’t find in a tent, like a fridge, a stove—even air conditioning!
If you have a larger family car or an SUV, consider a travel trailer. Travel trailers have everything you’d find in a tent trailer, but with extras like bathrooms and even more space and storage.
If you have a truck, you can tow a 5th wheel trailer. They’re a little more expensive, but you’ll have much more space. These are ideal for families looking to travel long distances or more frequently. And if you’re not a fan of the swaying motion on regular travel trailers—5th wheels are more stable on the road and are easier to tow.
Motorhomes
If you’re thinking about investing in a motorized RV, there are many floor plan options to consider (bunk beds, over-cab sleeping areas, etc.), plus there are three types of motorhome: Class A, Class B and Class C.
Class A motorhomes are the biggest—they’re built using heavy-duty frames. What they lack in fuel economy, they make up for in space and luxury. Class B motorhomes are more like oversized vans. They’re the small but tall enough for standing room and they’re perfect for weekend trips. Class C motorhomes, are also known as “mini motorhomes.” They’re a mixture of Class A and Class B, with over-cab sleeping areas. Class C motorhomes are the most popular, and quite affordable.
